An alternator problem can cause your battery’s power reserve to become emptied to the point that your car won’t start, potentially leaving you in need of assistance. To avoid such a situation, it’s best to get to the shop when you first suspect that alternator trouble is brewing. At HESCO Automotive & Performance Center, our local mechanics are highly experienced with alternator and auto electric repair in the greater Birmingham, AL area.

Symptoms of Alternator Failure

An alternator issue can cause electrical accessories to malfunction. In modern vehicles, there are commonly computers that can determine which electrical accessories should have their power diminished so that more power is saved for the car’s most essential electrical needs. However, this can then lead to issues with accessories such as power seats/windows reacting poorly when you try to adjust them. A faulty alternator can also cause headlights to start dimming or flickering, which could in turn create a safety hazard when driving at night.

Another common sign of an alternator problem is an illuminated dashboard warning light. This light may light up with the letters ALT or GEN, or in the form of a little rectangular battery. Whenever a warning light flashes on, it’s important to promptly identify what’s triggering it so that the issue can be resolved before it gets worse.

A dead battery may also indicate an alternator problem. However, there are several other issues that can cause a car battery to die, such as parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, and forgetting to shut off your headlights. But if none of these issues are present, then it’s worth further looking into your alternator as the potential cause of your dead battery.
